Managing Screen Time: Tips for Creating Digital Balance in Your Household

Free to Be Mindful

Managing screen time can be challenging for families because children are often surrounded by screens, even unintentionally. It's not uncommon to see toddlers who can navigate an iPhone more easily than their grandparents. Society has certainly evolved, but managing screen time is not impossible.

Here are a few tips to help the entire household manage screen time effectively:

Set Clear Rules. Implement written and posted rules to establish clear expectations. For instance, restrict gaming devices in the mornings before school, and set specific times for usage during the week and weekends. Establishing consistent rules can help reduce arguments overall.

Have Screen-Free Times and Zones. Parents can control screen usage in certain areas, such as the kitchen table during meals. It is also beneficial to keep electronics out of children's bedrooms. If electronics must be in their rooms, collect all devices at bedtime to prevent late-night usage.

Encourage Educational Content. Although challenging, encouraging children to watch educational content can be beneficial. Watching YouTube on a TV signed in through a child's email, which blocks inappropriate content, allows parents to monitor their viewing. Discuss inappropriate programming and reinforce educational videos to ensure children are learning something valuable.

Stay Active. Involvement in at least one extracurricular activity outside the home, whether it's a sport, musical instrument, or scouting, may help reduce unnecessary screen time. While it doesn't guarantee less device usage, it fills time with enjoyable activities.

Be Consistent. Consistency in enforcing rules is crucial. Although tiring and effort-intensive, being consistent from the start makes it less likely for children to break the rules. Children will always test boundaries, but consistent enforcement ensures they understand and respect the set guidelines.

It's the responsibility of parents to keep up with changing times. By implementing these tips, families can better manage screen time and create a balanced digital environment.
